GOAL METHODOLOGY

In order for goals to be achieved, it is essential that they are frequently reviewed so that any necessary adjustments can be made on the fly. In the example illustrated below, our starting point is A and we are trying to get to our goal B. As we are moving towards B we are gathering information about our final destination B. However, when we get ½ way to B it may become apparent that we need to go to C instead. Without consistent review of our goals we may end up at B when we should have been at C.

A more accurate illustration of goal movement is illustrated below. Because we stay in touch with our goals (weekly or monthly Game Improvement Plan), we can adjust them as required. Therefore, we can properly move towards our goal by moving from A to C to D and finally to E. We must all remember to enjoy the process along the way. This is the methodology practiced in the Egolfplan system.

SMART OBJECTIVES

SMART Method Success"SMART Objectives" refers to an acronym built round the five leading measures of a strong plan. This acronym can be very helpful in writing objectives that can be employed to evaluate the quality of plans proposed and carried out.

SPECIFIC - What exactly am I going to do?
The program states a specific outcome, or a precise objective to be accomplished. The outcome is stated in numbers, percentages, frequency, reach, etc. The objective is clearly defined.

MEASURABLE - Is it measurable and can I measure it?
This means that the objective can be measured and the measurement source is identified. All activities should be measurable at some level.

ACHIEVABLE - Can I get it done?
The objective or expectation of what will be accomplished must be realistic given the time period, resources allocated, etc.

RELEVANT - Will this objective lead to my desired result?
This means that the outcome or results of the task directly supports the outcome of my overall long-range plan or goals.

TIME-FRAMED - When will I accomplish this objective?
This means stating clearly when the objective will be achieved.

Examples of SMART Objectives include the following:

  • Practice my putting for 2 hours this week by practicing lag putting for 1 hour and short-range putting (10' and in) for 1 hour
  • Read 1 chapter each night of my mental game book
  • Play (2) 9 hole practice rounds this week with my only thought being "play the shot at hand"
